We use a variety of approaches to support reading development in our Primary Phase. These are tailored to bets meet the needs of individuals. Our reading scheme is structured and uses levelled set of books written specifically to ensure that your child can take steady and progressive steps towards reading success. We are also mindful of the need to support wider reading and reading for pleasure. Therefore, we dedicate time within the timetable for regular guided reading sessions.
Early reading begins with Oxford Reading Tree (ORT) characters and early picture books, as well as ORT phonics books. Once pupils begin ORT reading books, they are expected to answer comprehension questions to build on their understanding. As pupils’ confidence and ability to read, through phonetic knowledge and understanding of text, improves, the breadth of publishers and schemes expands. As their understanding of text broadens, the range of comprehension questions and activities will expand, and they will use their knowledge and skills to respond to decode, interpret, retrieve, explain and make a choice.
